Cats are one of the friendliest things to draw. A cat is built from a few soft shapes — a round head, two pointed ears, an oval body and a long tail — so a cat drawing can be as simple as five lines, or as detailed as you want to take it.
Most people start with the head. Get the head and the ears right and the rest follows: the eyes, the small triangle nose, the whiskers, and then the body and the legs. If you are drawing a cat for the first time, keep it light and loose — a rough circle with two triangles already reads as a cat, which is why so many people learn to doodle one before anything else.
If you want a cute cat drawing, the trick is proportion rather than detail: a slightly oversized head, big eyes set low and wide apart, small ears and short legs. That is the same recipe behind kawaii cat drawings and most cartoon cats — a realistic cat needs shading and fur, while a cute cat needs the right proportions and almost nothing else.

How to Draw a Cat in 5 Steps

Draw the head
Start with a circle for the head. It does not have to be perfect — cats are round animals, and a slightly wide circle reads better than a perfect one. Keep the line light so you can change it later.

Add two pointed ears
Draw a triangle on each side of the top of the circle. Small ears look friendlier; big upright ears look more alert. Round the tips slightly if you want a softer cat.

Place the eyes and the nose
Two small ovals for the eyes, set low and wide apart. Under them, a small triangle for the nose, pointing down. This is the step that decides whether your cat looks cute — low, wide-set eyes make the biggest difference.

Sketch the body and the legs
Draw a rounded oval below the head for the body, overlapping the head slightly so the cat sits rather than floats. Then two short front legs, with small paws at the bottom. Keep this part loose — an easy cat sketch is mostly the head, and the body only has to suggest the shape.

Add the tail and the whiskers
A long curve to one side for the tail, then three short lines either side of the nose for whiskers. If you want stripes, a few short strokes on the head and the back are usually enough to read as a tabby.
Cat Drawing Tips
Light first, dark later
Sketch in light strokes, then go over the lines you like. Nothing here is permanent until you save it, so changing your mind costs nothing.
Head first, body second
The head carries the whole drawing. If the head and the ears are right, the body can be almost any shape and it still looks like a cat. When you are learning how to draw a cat, spend most of your time on the first three steps.
An oversized head makes a cute cat
For a cute or cartoon cat rather than a realistic one, make the head bigger than it should be and the legs shorter. Most of the cuteness comes from that one adjustment — it is the whole difference between a cat face drawing that looks sweet and one that looks stiff.
White is your eraser
The canvas is white and white is one of the ten colours, so painting white over a line removes it. Handy for whiskers, or for a tail that went the wrong way.
